Business Days vs Calendar Days: What's the Difference?

Calendar days count every named date. Business days, on Datefold Studio, count Monday through Friday only. That is a weekday convention, not a legal definition. The business days calculator states this on the page: public holidays are not excluded. If a holiday falls on a Wednesday, it still contributes one weekday.

Calendar days

Seven calendar days always span a weekend. The date difference calculator and the add days tool both use calendar days. Friday to the next Friday is 7 elapsed calendar days and includes Saturday and Sunday in the span.

Weekdays

Weekdays here are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Saturday and Sunday are weekend dates. The site does not follow regional weekend patterns that treat Friday or Sunday as the weekly rest day. If your workplace uses a different pair of rest days, this counter will not match it.

Weekend exclusions

When you count weekdays between two dates, each Saturday and Sunday in the included range adds to the weekend total and not to the weekday total. Those two numbers plus each other equal the total included calendar dates. If they do not, something is wrong—the engine is built so they always reconcile.

Public holidays

Datefold Studio does not ship a table of national holidays, observed Mondays, or company shutdowns. New Year’s Day, Independence Day, or a local festival on a weekday still counts as a business day here. That is the most important limitation on the tool. Do not file a court paper, tax form, or bank instruction from this number alone.

Counting endpoints

Include start date and Include end date default to on. A Monday–Friday week with both ends included is 5 weekdays and 0 weekend dates if the range is exactly that workweek. Uncheck start to begin counting the day after start. Uncheck end to stop before the last date. If start equals end and both are included, that one date is counted once. If either end is excluded, the range is empty: zeros across the board. A lone Saturday with both ends included is 1 total, 0 weekdays, 1 weekend.

If start is after end, the page asks you to fix the range or use Swap Dates. It will not flip the dates on its own. That differs from the elapsed-day tool, which allows reverse order and reports direction.

Adding business days

The second mode walks forward or backward counting only Monday–Friday. The start date is not one of the counted days when N is not zero. Worked example: Friday, March 6, 2026, add 1 business day. Saturday and Sunday are skipped; the result is Monday, March 9, 2026. Worked example 2: Monday, March 9, 2026, add −1. The result is Friday, March 6, 2026. Zero returns the original date even if you start on Sunday; it does not snap to Monday.

Why this may differ from an official deadline

Statutes sometimes say “business days” and then define holidays, mailing rules, or “next day the office is open.” Banks close on observed holidays. Payroll systems skip company holidays. None of that is in this browser tool. A weekday-only calculator can still help you sketch how many office-week days sit in a span, as long as you treat holidays as a separate checklist.

Practical planning

If you study only on weekdays, count weekdays between the first session and the test, then decide whether those endpoints belong in the total. If you need a date ten weekdays after a kickoff, use Add Business Days. If you need ten days including the weekend homework block, use add calendar days instead. Mixing the two without saying so is how plans slip by two days.

A Saturday-only range is a useful self-check. Set start and end to the same Saturday, keep both endpoints included, and count: total 1, weekdays 0, weekends 1. Uncheck either endpoint and all three numbers go to 0. Then add 1 business day to that Saturday: the start is skipped, Sunday is skipped, and Monday is the result. Those clicks take a few seconds and show the two modes are not the same question.

Questions

Are holidays removed automatically?

No. Weekdays are counted even when they are public holidays.

Why did Friday plus one business day skip to Monday?

Saturday and Sunday are not weekdays, so they are not counted. Monday is the first weekday after Friday.

Do weekday and weekend totals have to match the span?

Yes. Their sum is the number of included calendar dates.
